General
What is Tacet?
A browser extension for Chrome and Brave that hides clutter on the desktop Facebook website: sponsored posts, suggestions, Reels, Stories, activity noise and layout elements you don't want. Everything happens locally in your browser.
Which browsers and platforms are supported?
Google Chrome and Brave on desktop, using a single Manifest V3 package. Tacet works on the Facebook desktop website. It cannot run inside the Facebook mobile apps.
Is Tacet affiliated with Facebook?
No. Tacet is independent software and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Meta Platforms, Inc.
Is it free?
Version 1.0 is available at no cost. If paid features are ever introduced, they will be described clearly before you opt in and will never affect the privacy guarantees.
Privacy and safety
Does Tacet send any data anywhere?
No. There are no analytics, no telemetry and no servers. Settings are stored in the browser's local extension storage. See the privacy policy.
Can it change anything on my account?
No. It only changes what is rendered in your tab. It never likes, follows, posts, comments, messages or sends requests.
Why does it need access to facebook.com?
The content script has to run on the Facebook page to hide items. Access is limited to the Facebook desktop domains and nothing else.
Does it work with ad blockers or Brave Shields?
Yes. Those tools block network requests; Tacet tidies the content that still renders. They complement each other.
Using Tacet
Something I wanted to see was hidden. How do I get it back?
Click the toolbar icon and use Reveal latest, or enable the "Why was this hidden?" placeholder in settings so each hidden item offers Show once, Always allow this type, Change rule and Undo. You can also add the person or page to an allow list.
Do I need to reload Facebook after changing a setting?
Ordinary toggles apply instantly to open tabs. A reload is only needed in rare cases, and the settings page tells you when.
What is a Quiet Mode?
A preset: Focus, Balanced, Social or Minimal. Presets are editable and switching between them never deletes your custom rules or allow lists.
What is the Quiet Score?
A simple local tally of what was hidden in the current session. It is an activity counter, not a wellbeing or productivity measurement, and it is never transmitted.
How do text filters work?
You can mute exact phrases, lists of terms, whole words, or regular expressions, optionally case-insensitive. Allow rules override block rules. Each rule has a description, a test box and an on/off switch, and the whole set can be exported and imported.
Can I hide a specific element that has no toggle?
Yes, with the experimental Element Picker. It generates a stable, semantic rule where possible and shows a health indicator so you know if the rule stops matching.
When things go wrong
Facebook changed and some things are no longer hidden. Why?
Facebook updates its page structure often. Tacet is built to prefer showing content over hiding the wrong thing, so when a detector stops recognising Facebook it steps aside. Diagnostics will indicate that an update may be needed, and updates are released to restore detection.
Facebook looks broken. What should I do?
Open the popup and use Pause on this tab to confirm whether Tacet is involved. If it is, open Diagnostics, press Something is broken, copy the privacy-safe report and send it to support@gettacet.com. You can also disable individual detectors.
How do I reset everything?
Settings → Overview → Reset all. Each section also has its own reset. Consider exporting your rules first.
